British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation on Thursday after only 44 days in office, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in the United Kingdom’s history. She stated that a leadership election will be completed within the next week and she will remain in the post until a successor has been chosen.
Her resignation follows a failed mini-budget, which resulted in Truss replacing Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng with Jeremy Hunt and reversing a number of economic policies. In addition, Home Secretary Suella Braverman stepped down on Wednesday. 17 Conservative lawmakers called on the prime minister to resign earlier today, with Labour and Liberal Democrats urging an immediate general election.
